This is Borobudur in its true function and form — as a place of worship and ritual. Waisak (or Vesak) is the celebration of three important events for Buddhists namely the Birth of Prince Siddharta in Lumbini Park in 623 B.C., Prince Siddhartha attained Great Enlightenment and became a Buddha in Buddha-Gaya (Bodh Gaya) at the age of 35 in 588 B.C., Gautama Buddha died at Kusinara at the age of 80 in 543 B.C.
The Trisuci Waisak event is held once every year between May – June during the full moon.
